Art/Painting

The class will consist of beginning and intermediate painting techniques using acrylic paint.  You will receive weekly instruction along with time to practice techniques and work on projects.  You will learn to show your work and how to give and receive critiques from your peers.  The class will culminate with a best piece/pieces showing.

Ear for Music?

Is music just a background sound in your life?  Well, no more!  This class will focus on what it is that makes the music we like great.  We will listen to many different styles and discuss what we like about them.  We will listen for elements that are common to all styles and discuss how each piece of music is unique.  Students are encouraged to bring an open mind and music examples from their collection to share.

 How to Play Music in a "Pick-Up" Band

In this class you will learn how to play music with other musicians.  This class will look at ways musicians work together with a variety of instruments and music forms.  We will be open to many musical styles including folk, blues, jazz, country, and pop and you don't have to be a great reader.  You will need your own instrument in working order and the ability to play at least 4 to 6 complete songs.  It's time to get out and be a part of a great musical tradition.

Introduction to Herbs and Aromatherapy

Students will delve into the intriguing world of herbs and essential oils and learn basic, practical information.  We will study 12 common perennial herbs that can be grown in Maine and 11 common, inexpensive essential oils.  Students will receive a 1oz. bag of each herb in dried form from the instructor's garden and a 2 ml. vial of each oil.  Herb properties, uses energetics, safety precautions, tastes, texture, fragrance, habitat, preservation, and storage requirements will be presented.  Production, safety precautions, proper storage, quality concerns, properties, energetics and use will also be presented for essential oils.  Material fee:  $60.00, payable to the instructor  the first night of class.  Optional book fee:  $17.00, also payable to the instructor/author the first night of class.  Book is not required for class.  Please note that students MUST be enrolled at least two weeks prior to start of class so that materials can be prepared.

Introduction to Laptops

Laptops are different from regular PC's: they provide great mobility but operate differently.  This class focuses on how to handle, operate, configure, and troubleshoot a laptop.  The class will begin with how to handle a laptop safely and how to manage risks to the laptop when in transit.  We'll then learn about the different connections to the laptop for mice, projection monitors, external speakers, and printers, to name a few.  An overview of networking a laptop will be given for both wireless and wired network connections.  We'll cover all the different types of drives that can be used with the laptop from CD drives to DVD drives to floppy drives--both internal and external.  Laptops are dependent on their batteries for operation and mobility.  We'll cover how to manage and maintain the battery for long life and power efficiency.  We;'ll review all the unique keys found on the keyboard that help you manage laptop settings.  Last, we'll venture into the Windows operating system to learn how to control the settings on the laptop.

Parenting

When parents share their concerns and perspectives on their children, there is an opportunity to explore solutions and share resources.  Parents will learn about empathy, appropriate behaviors, brain development, rewards and punishments, praise and self-esteem, non-violent discipline and ways to have fun as a family.  We will practice strategies to be effective with discipline, help your child learn to cooperate, and increase your enjoyment and effectiveness as a parent.  Additional funding for this program has been provided by the Maine Children's Trust.  Please call Candy Eaton at 667-5304 ext 261, or email children@downeasthealth.org (by September 15, 2008) to apply for scholarships.

Pixie Tea Party

During the first two sessions, we will provide you and your child with all the materials and assistance needed to create a pixie costume your child can wear to our pixie tea party (last session).  We will create wings and wands and fit the pixies for their skirts in session 1.  Pixie hats and placemats will be made in session 2.  Pixies will also have a short lesson on setting a table and, with your help, will choose refreshments for you both to enjoy at the tea party.   In session 3, pixies will have the opportunity to show off their costumes with a pixie parade and decorate cookies made in the shape of their favorite animals.  We will then end the afternoon with refreshments and lots of fun.  Materials fee per child:  $25.00, payable to the instructor at the first class.

Understanding the mysteries of human nature.  Learn why people think, feel, and act as they do.  This class will help you define your goals and the obstacles you need to overcome to achieve those goals. Residential Electrical Course

Seventy percent of an electrician's job is knowing laws and rules.  In this course, you will learn the laws for safely running electricity in your own home to properly meet code requirements.  We will cover the National Electric Code, electrical service (meter box) as well as installing lighting receptacles, troubleshooting electrical problems, housing layouts and requirements, and sizing and layout of electrical heat for a building or home.  Materials fee:  $15.00, payable to the instructor on the first night of class.

                                            Secrets of the Psychic World

This course is divided into 6 classes covering specific areas of the psychic world.  Class 1:  soul travel, divination, psychic readings, evaluation of intuitive gifts, sharing of experiences/questions.  Class 2:  clairvoyance, telepathy, clairaudience, Edgar Cayce.  Class 3:  ghosts, spirits, and the after-life.  Topics are accompanied by visual aids.  Class 4:  dreams, astral travel, and symbology.  Class 5:  astrology and shamanism.  Class 6:  numerology and omen readings.  Students will be called by the instructor regarding the sharing of experiences/questions prior to class 1.

Teddy Bear Picnic

We will be holding this picnic indoors to keep the Teddy Bears from catching cold!  Bring your favorite Teddy and join us for a fun-filled afternoon.  Introduce us to your bear and tell us how you met!  There will be light refreshments, games, and stories, all with Teddy in mind.  You will have the opportunity to make a Teddy Bear ornament to take home with you.  And of course, what Teddy Bear picnic would be complete without a parade?  Children and bears under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.  Materials fee:  $3.00, payable to Kathy Pelletier, due separately with registration fee payable to Bucksport Adult and Community Education.

Women's Self Defense

This class is designed specifically to teach women how to protect themselves.  You will learn the common do's and don'ts of self defense, how to use your body as a weapon, what to do in certain situations, and the best ways to prevent these situations from happening.  There is no such thing as too small, too old, or too big.  Your safety and the safety of those close to you may depend on you.  Minimum 8 People.  Age 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
